Episode #059 - Albert X

It doesn't happen really often, that we consider a guest mix by a DJ or producer who's taste and style are heavily informed by modern deephouse and minimal techno. But for people like Albert X, we always like to make an exception.

Episode #056 - Gemini Brothers

This week we have a guest mix from another Balearic outfit. Gemini Brothers consists of Ionut and Razvan from Bucharest, Romania and they have been producing together for more or less two years now. They have been incorporating all sorts of styles into their work, ranging from dark and psychedelic disco to house, techno and even some bits of acid.
These guys appeared on our radar earlier this year, when they released a remix for Hiem on the amazing NANG records and were quite surprised by their very diverse sound. They have been sending us their demo's for quite some time now and we invited them to the series to showcase some of their work in progress and some of the stuff they personally love. This is the result.

Episode #052 - Tronik Youth

Eclectic mixage from the southeast of the UK this week. We've got mister NEIN records himself - Mr. Neil Parnell from Canterbury, England in the mix. Neil has been on a major roll with his Tronik Youth project in the past 12 months. We first got to know him through Andrew Weatherall's visits to Amsterdam and we've also heard the Optimo guys play some of his records. Earlier this year, he had the honor of doing a mix for the Disko Selectors guys, which was quite amazing. Later, he got in contact with us and offered to do a mix for us, we just couldn't resist. This is the result, a relentless, tight, eclectic mix that really showcases all the sounds that influence him.

Episode #047 - Ric Piccolo

Next in line is one of Argentinia's most dedicated crate diggers! We'd like to welcome Ricardo Piccolo from Buenos Aires to our family.
Ricardo is a DJ/producer who likes to spend his time in record stores, flea markets and record faires, when not working on his music. Besides the typical nu-disco and house, he maintains a very strong focus on 70's raregroove and experimental music.
He's also toured a lot through Argentinia and Europe extensively and he's got another tour coming up in Europe through this summer. He's also got a monster of a first release out on Bordello a Parigi, aptly named 'Austral Works vol.1', which should be out right now. It's limited to 250 copy's and rumour has it that they are working on vol.2, which should be out not too long from now.
His Pampas Disco Shock and Pampas Porno Shock mixes are quite notorious and he kindly offered us to host the next mix in the Porno Shock Series. Again, he's crossing many borders with this one, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

We'd like to thank Ricardo for this amazing DJ set and hope you'll enjoy this one as much as we do! For more on Ricardo Piccolo visit the links below!

Nick Mackrory ft. Harry Collier

After the success of the 'Tatooine Moons' release last month, Forgotten Corner records already returns with it's third physical single containing the 'Lucky Charms' track by Forgotten Corner artist Nick Mackrory.
The track has been played for some time now, by artists like Joe's Bakery and Nancy Noise, so it might be familiar to some people. It's vocals by Harry Collier are instantly recognizable and are interwoven with some wonderfull, clever bass patterns on top of it. It has an amazing live feeling and bursts out in an epic synth jam, full of rich textures.

Realizing the vocals just might not be for everyone, the label included a 'forgotten dub' version of the track. A clever move, as it has been championed by many great DJ's in the Balearic fields, but also beyond. Some of you might remember this one from Disko Selector's exclusive deathmetaldiscoclub mix, it also received attention by guys like Craig Bratley and some of you dutchies probably heard Rogér play this one too. It has every potential to become a instant hit and we are very happy to see this finally hit the record stores on wax.

Forgotten Corner is releasing the 'Lucky Charms EP' around April 1st, so this should be out by now. Keep track on this through your favourite stores as it will be a limited to 300 copy's.
It comes in hand screen printed inserts on heavy vinyl. Link below!

Episode #046 - Ele Mikelø

We are really happy to welcome Ele Mikelø from Zafra, Spain to the family. We first got to know him through his amazing DJ sets for his Series Disko! mix, run by our good friends from the Disko Selectors. Ele can easily be heralded as one of Spain's most promising DJ acts to operate in the national Balearic scene. In most cases, people think of 'chill-out' when they hear the term Balearic, but the genre cannot be informed as an actual genre. It's a way of blending and doing things. And Ele is a great ambassador for presenting this, often playing that typical kind of slow-burning music with a dark and cosmic overtone.

This was the main reason for inviting him and we are extremely happy with the result. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Ele Mikelø. Enjoy!

Episode #028 - Rothmans

We have Mr. Rothman in the mix this week. Mr. Rothman is the mysterious character from the UK who runs the amazing Rothmans label, a label that is based on the collectible football cards from the 70's. Every release they do is dedicated to one of the classic football players from the 70's/early 80's era. And we are happy to host this mix, dedicated to their next release, which will hit the stores somewhere around september 30th!

Rothmans fourth single is dedicated to Claudio Gentile, the infamous Italian Juventus defender who ran a succesful international career in that bygone era. The fourth release includes original tracks by two Deathmetal-affiliates, namely Ali Renault and Iron Blu from Flight Recorder. Next to those, the release also hosts a track by Posthuman and a Felix Dickinson rework of Cage & Aviary track. Sublime stuff again, and we definetly advise you to check the previews at the link below!

For now, enjoy this mix by Mr. Rothman himself and don't forget to follow him on Soundcloud or Facebook, if you'd like to keep informed on all his actions work!

VA - The Pink Collection

Belgian's finest, Eskimo Recordings, is infamous for putting out amazing releases and the wonderful compilations that came along. We were happy to find a promotional package in our mailbox earlier this week, regarding their upcoming 'The Pink Collection' compilation.
The album features 13 tracks, some exclusive, by artists like Kasper Bjørke, Holy Models, Brynjolfur and Majestique and the running order does a wonderful job on building intensity. Lots of balearic gems on this one again. We couldn't help but pick Ichisan's 'Jugoton' as a definitive favourite.

The compilation marks the beginning of a new series for Eskimo, based on colours. And as Maouris already pointed out, it’s reassuring to find that Eskimo still stands for timeless quality and originality.

Eskimo Recordings will release the 'The Pink Collection' compilation on September 2nd 2013 through N.E.W.S. Distribution and will be available on CD only. Must-have!

Episode #020 - Andrew Weatherall

This week's guest is Andrew Weatherall. A HUGE influence to all of us. Andrew has been in the business for over twenty years now and has been one of the leading figures in the electronic music scene. From acid to post punk, from techno to disco, this guy has seen it all. We're proud to have him on our show.
As a musician, producer and remixer Andrew has been famed for his work with The Sabres of Paradise and it's accompanying label. He was also the mastermind behind the Emissions Audio Output label but really caught the world's attention when he got signed to Warp Records with his Two Lone Swordsmen project, a project he did with Keith Tenniswood.
These days Andrew focuses on his newest project, The Asphodells, a project he does with his studio engineer Timothy J. Fairplay. They've just released an amazing debut album in the beginning of 2013. They've been remixed quite a few times now and we are happy to announce that they've got an remix album coming up on September 2nd.

For those who are in and around Amsterdam on July 26th, Andrew will be doing an all-nighter in De Verdieping @ Trouw Amsterdam, together with Sean Johnston under the A Love From Space moniker. Which we are really looking forward to. For tickets & event info go to: www.facebook.com/events/498330836902923/
In the meantime, enjoy his newest effort for deathmetaldiscoclub!!

VA - The Dominique Rocheteau EP

UK-Based label Rothmans is going to put out it's third release soon! Rothmans is a label that is based on the collectible football cards from the 70's. This time it's now-legendary striker Dominique Rocheteau who takes the homage.
First up on the A-side of this four-tracker is Coyote with a funky but tripped-out, acid-laden disco groove. Really nice work. Second track is a track by Aimes from New York and includes wonderful sound design that should work in any balearic set this summer.

Second side opens with a track by the brilliant Scott Fraser and that should say enough. Brilliant bassline on that one. But it's the closing track from Tilburg's experimental Drvg Cvltvre that really catches the attention.. Almost like an outcast, this track opens with a really, really dirty and bassline and shows no signs of improvement on the happier side. Filtered organs and tight distorted percussion makes the thing even more haunting than it already was. The devil is in the details..

Rothmans003 is due out first week of July on 180 grams vinyl and will hit all major records shops worldwide. We included a Soundcloud set with previews of the whole release. Keep a close eye on this one: strictly limited release and no digital!!

Episode #013 - Reza Athar

This week's guest is Reza Athar from Nijmegen. A name most of you probably haven't heard of. But Reza is without a doubt one of the most serious talents in Holland to be reckoned with. His mixes for TheNewWorck already caught our attention once, but this mix is just insane. In this spacious and balearic mix he reaches out to cosmic heights, on a level that few DJ's from the Netherlands understand. We are very certain that there are great things to come for this guy and this is why we asked him to contribute. We couldn't be any happier with the result!

Reza will be playing next to Prins Thomas, Gerd Janson and Mugwump on the upcoming Horizon event, amongst others. You can find the event through: www.facebook.com/events/241592685980639

We really hope that you like this weeks episode as much as we do! Thanks again, Reza!

Episode #002 - Kalidasa

Today we have Kalidasa on the show, a project by Tim Rivers. Tim Rivers is a DJ/producer from the UK who has been building quite a name since late 2011 with his exciting blend of Disco/Balearic/House sound. He is also the founder of the website www.theacidhouse.com, always an interesting read, which we've been following for quite a few years now. We are very honoured to have him on the show and we asked him some questions in advance. Enjoy!

In 2011, you did an excellent split EP together with Timothy J. Fairplay for the World Unknown imprint. How did that come about?

It was at about the same time that I had hosted a mix for World Unknown on theacidhouse.com blog. I had been in dialogue with Andy Blake and we had chatted about the coincidence, when I had discovered by synchronicity Gatto Fritto; an artist that Andy had put out on his Dissident label; was a friend of mine from the ‘old days’. I went on to tell Andy that it was Gatto’s “Hungry Ghost” track that inspired me to buy a bass guitar, wipe the dust of my lead guitar and start recording. I got a reply from Andy, asking me to send in a clip of what I was working on, so I sent in two tracks a 120bpm acid house track and a 105bpm unfinished version of Bursting Through, explaining that I was more of a doodler and had never finished a track in my life. I got a surprise email back from Andy, whom told me that Joe and himself were starting a new label and said that Bursting Through was exactly the type of thing they were looking, and if I would be interested in letting them release it if I got it finished, that was enough motivation right there to get it completed, and that is how it came about. The World Unknown label have so far always put two artists on each release, I was very happy to be sharing the release with Timothy J Fairplay, I have a lot of respect for his work, he puts out some great music.

Your Bursting Through track has been a big one for us, but recently got licensed by Andy Weatherall for the Ministry of Sound mix he did. That must be quite the exposure! Did you notice any increase of interest by labels and promoters since then?

I feel very privileged that Andrew selected this track for his Master Piece compilation, unexpected, and more than I could have hoped for. Since the record was released there has been steady interest, and I am already working with some of these labels.

Your productions contain a lot of elements from a lot of different styles. Could you tell us a bit more about your influences?

Yes of course, I guess I have always had a broad taste in music. Growing up as a kid I was buying Electro Streetsound compilations, Synth pop and the like. And as a young skateboarder I was into bands with heavy guitar sounds, like The Stupids, The Cult and The Cramps. I played guitar (badly) in a school band called The Moondogs, we would listen to lots of music from the 50’s and 60’s mostly mainstream things like The Beatles, The Monkees, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly etc. I then started to discover more psychedelic bands like Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles and I turned into a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix. Acid House obviously influenced me, around that time I developed a love for the early European techno lables such as R&S, Music Man and Beat Box. I would find myself religiously listening too & recording the Colin Dale and Colin Faver shows on Kiss FM, and at weekends finding myself in some dank squat party or traveller site. Over the last decade or so I continue to explore many different sounds such as Afro beat, Kraut Rock, Blues, Industrial and most things Psychedelic. A few years back I studied Hypnosis and the varying states of trance that one enters; I try and include an element of inducing this within productions. My productions tend to have live guitars, bongos, synths and some 303 action, sub consciously influenced by what I have listened to over the years.

It seems that disco music has had some kind of a resurgence in 2012. What are your thoughts on this one?

Ha, well I am probably not the most informed person to ask this question, I am not one to keep up with current trends,  from my own experience I cannot say I have noticed a resurgence in 2012, but maybe it passed me by, which is easily done. In Brighton, where I am based there was quite a bit of interest in disco music between 2008-2011, I would say it has become maybe less played in 2012 in the city now, but there are still nights like Kinfolk that play it, probably more of the leftfield variety, among many other styles of music. I have noticed some excellent disco sounding releases this year, Justin V’s remix of Soft Rocks Talking Jungle has been huge. I think we are living in a time where we have access to music at our finger tips now, it is so easily accessible, I would say all music from the past has had a resurgence, thanks to the accessibility the internet provides in general.

Through Soundcloud, you recently submitted the Molly Cule track, which sounds really promising. What can we expect from Kalidasa in the near-future?

You can expect a remix I have done for Franz Underwear on Tusk Wax that will be in the shops very soon (I think sometime in Feb), and I am also working with the same label on an EP. There will be a release this year by the summer if all goes well on Craig Bratley’s new label Magic Feet. There are also some new tracks I am working on at the moment. The last few months I have been busy with a new project “The Centaurs”, a production/dj duo with Gordon Kaye that we started in November 2012, and have recently done remixes for Public Service Broadcasting and 254, with some more in the pipeline. There is of course the continuation of the Kinfolk Parties in Brighton that I do with Soft Rocks and Easy Jim, where every couple of months we put on an intimate basement party, which are always great fun, Feb’s edition sees Phil Mison joining us, and a surprise DJ from Body and Soul.

The mix you've sent us covers a lot of grounds. Could you tell us a bit more about the mix you've sent us?

Not sure what to say on this, there are guitars, bongos and some squelchy acid moments. It is not meant to be a club mix, it is a selection of music you can listen too off the dance floor as well as on, works well on a long drive, it is quite laid back chugging along from 100-115bpm.
